We have been experimenting with a number of different models of patron driven online book acquisitions. The main variants have been the triggering event for purchase (single or multiple uses), level of promotional efforts, preselection by librarians vs. no preselection, and intermediated vs. direct acquisition models. In our most recent experiment, we have loaded 55,000 E-Book Library titles into our OPAC which will be acquired after the second use. The first two uses will be on a short-term loan basis. All online books appear in our catalog and selected ones have been promoted in departmental outreach and on our web guides. My poster will provide data on what worked and why.
