Construction of a 10nm planar confinement cell for helium-4 and studies on the empty cell

During the construction of the cell, unexpected bonding problems were encountered. Therefore, this work discusses the numerous attempts and new bonding techniques, like vacuum bonding, that were applied in order to solve these problems. Despite great efforts, the bonding results could not be improved and a non-uniformly bonded cell had to be used for the consequent experiment. During the measurements it turned out that the cell was blocked, i.e. only the filling line above the cell contained liquid helium. Therefore, a detailed study of the role of the liquid in the filling line was conducted and is presented in this work. The bonding attempts and the study of the empty cell, are relevant for planning future experiments with very small confinement sizes.
