The dynamical transition of myoglobin for low hydrations studied with terahertz time domain spectroscopy

Terahertz time domain spectroscopy was performed to determine the temperature dependence of metmyoglobin in the range of 80-265K for different hydrations. Metmyoglobin in solution and ground powder was used. A procedure was developed to determine and guarantee hydration levels of the powder samples. The dynamical transition could be observed for hydration h=0.27g/g and higher in the real and imaginary part of the dielectric constant. Fits with the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher equation indicate a distribution of relaxation processes.
