To date, there has been no systematic evaluation of the vast significance of the life and work of Edgar Allan Poe, or Frances Sargent Osgood, upon the writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne. In this thesis, we present documentation to prove that indeed, the lives and works of both Poe and Osgood are invaluable in understanding the themes and subtext of many of Hawthorne's short and long form writings, including, "The Scarlet Letter." For further substantiation, we make a strong case for the authorship of a previously unknown tale, "The Snow Storm, as the work of Edgar Allan Poe.
