Photonic crystal based optical circuitry

This work focuses on the microfabrication and nanofabrication of structures in three-dimensional photonic crystals and their exploitation in optical circuitry. We have shown microfabrication of defect structures such as channel waveguides and beam splitters using two-photon lithography inside polymer infiltrated three-dimensional photonic crystals which have gaps centered in visible region. The fabricated channel waveguide was capable of guiding light through it. Furthermore, we have investigated a new class of photopatternable material, DNA resin. We have shown microfabrication of photonic structures like two-dimensional photonic crystals and beam splitters in films cast from such resins. The film exhibited amplified spontaneous emission from dyes intercalated inside the helical structure of DNA. It was confirmed with Raman spectroscopy that the DNA and the Ormocer were removed from the unpolymerized regions after the process of development.
