Statement of issue / Problem . The main objective of this thesis is how to design new development in an historical urban fabric. Throughout the study, the response of the question, "how could a new building both reflect its period, and also have traces from the existing pre-established relations within its historical context?" will be explored. Statement of significance of issue . Every leading city has within its core historic areas which are integral components of urban fabric contributing to the city's image and strengthening its identity. Such areas are of immense historical significance, containing rich townscape, architecture and landscape. These have remained as points of reference providing physical anchorage in the fast changing frame-work of the city. Such areas are now under threat and are fast loosing their status, giving way to new development that is insensitive to the historic urban fabric and architectural character of the city. Method of inquiry . The thesis will involve research of precedents designed in context of historic urban fabric and explore issues related to the success and failure of the new building in contributing to the city's image and strengthening the city's identity. A site in the historic urban fabric of Mumbai, India will be analyzed and the historic styles will be examined and used as the springboard for the design of a new building within the historic core of the city. Expected outcome . The thesis will involve designing a new building in the historic urban fabric of Mumbai, India, and will focus on how the building will reflect its period, and also have traces from the existing pre-established relations within its historical urban fabric.
