The objective of this research project is to develop dendrimeric selenoxides as catalysts for the activation of hydrogen peroxide and subsequent halogenation of organic substrates in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and halide salts. These organochalcogen catalysts, also known as Se-zymes, mimic the haloperoxidase enzymes, which catalyze the oxidation of a halide by hydrogen peroxide to produce the corresponding hypohalous acid. These organochalcogen catalysts can be incorporated into a sol-gel thin film and coated onto the hulls of marine vessels. The coated sol-gels will minimize the adhesion of marine species by generating a hypohalous acid barrier with the available hydrogen peroxide and halide salts found in sea water.
