This thesis highlights underrepresented aspects of Bacon's contribution to the field of natural philosophy: his epistemological contributions and the mustering of support for the practices of natural philosophers. This is accomplished by an analysis of Bacon's works as well as critical responses to them. Bacon's contributions are examined both in light of subsequent developments within the scientific community and looking at the political influence exerted by Bacon's particular characterization of the project of natural philosophy.
