Statement of issue. The programmatic framework of a city forces its structure to be made up of systems which are specifically designed to create order in public spaces and the way in which they are navigated and used. I would like to explore the potential of the subway system and the ways in which it may more effectively contribute to the programmatic clarity of the city. Currently the prime function in the subways' underground systems is focused on the single utilitarian purpose of moving people throughout the city. The focus of study will concentrate on the tunnels linking the system, and on user interaction with the platform space. The subway platform is the specific site for my intervention. Statement of significance of issue. The transportation system is vital to a successful urban form. The opportunities for interesting architectural investigations and dynamic innovations, triggered by this urban network are typically ignored as purely functional requirements which overshadow the full potential of the system. My design will observe the power of the infrastructure which directs and moves people through like blood moves through veins in order to visualize how they are creating connections between the built world and the system designed to support it. Method of inquiry. I will observe a commuter platform of the downtown bound train line at Columbus Circle, 59 th Street in New York City. I will catalog movements of the users, serviced by the lines 1, 9, A, B, C and D. After observing I will re program this portion of the system in a series of studies in drawing, collage and model form, concentrating primarily on movement, locating the important areas of interaction. The research completed on February 12 2005 and February 28 2005 was given permission by MTA officials under the following contingencies: Proper identification and project documentation were to be available upon immediate request; the event should not last for more than one half hour during which my movements could not in any way disturb or disrupt the environment. Outcome. I will create an intervention that will define the experience of commuter. The design will reprogram the architectural elements giving them method of recording data entering and exiting the subway platform. The product of the thesis will provide a background for the different types of data collected from within the functioning system therefore highlighting and the hybrid condition inherent in this architectural environment.
