Bio-ethanol plant: Problems of stillage separation

The effect of various surfactants and flocculants on the stability of whole stillage (byproducts in a modern ethanol plant) was studied in order to increase the efficiency of the centrifuge unit in the plant. Among different surfactants tested, vinyl acetate had significant effect on the centrate recovery and separation of water from the whole stillage. Also combination of "307 Tramfloc " flucculant and commercial detergent provided good results. Treatment by ultrasound did not provide any significant effect on separation of water from the whole stillage. It was also found that hydrolysis of the whole stillage at high pressures (up to 420 Psi) can be utilized to increase the efficiency of centrate recovery.
