The untold story of Roycroft women

This dissertation explores the untold history of the original and contemporary women associated with the Roycroft of East Aurora, New York, bringing to light some of the historic and still existing issues plaguing women's equality. In addition to an overview of the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and an analysis of Elbert Hubbard and key Roycroft women including Alice Moore Hubbard, Clara Schlegel, Eleanor Douglas, Marilla Ricker, Dorothy Whitney Straight, and Ella Wheeler Wilcox is provided. This dissertation also discuss es the Roycroft's revival since the 1970s, contemporary female Roycrofters including Kitty Turgeon, Kathleen West, Laura Wilder, Janice McDuffie, Ann Perry Smith, Michele Conley Vogel, and Cynthia Stadelmeyer. The effect the Roycroft has had on the community is also evaluated.
