Transition metamaterials: A study of resonant absorption

Resonant absorption, a phenomenon that has been observed in inhomogeneous plasmas, is studied in transition metamaterials. The amount of enhancement of the fields within the transition layer changes with the angle of incidence and the slope of the transition layer near the singular point(s) in the case when losses are small. Afterwards, realistic losses are incorporated into the transition layer to determine if there is still enough resonant enhancement in the material to enable practical applications. The practicality of fabricated transition metamaterials is then examined when resonant absorption behavior changes with the separation of the zeros of the epsilon and mu profiles by some distance. Next, different transition layers are investigated to understand whether nonmagnetic transition layers, which are much easier to fabricate, will still exhibit resonant absorption. Finally, the incorporation of nonlinearity into the transition layer is introduced to get a quantitative measure of the appropriateness of transition layers for nonlinear applications.
