dc.description.abstractDeterminates of immigrant children's educational attainment has been studied by a great number of researchers in both sociology and education. Among many, social capital or called as social resources has been accepted as one of the most powerful factors. Compared social capital, the significance of cultural capital as determinants to children's educational attainment has been relatively under-qualified though cultural capital, which contains relational aspect and ethnicity aspect, should have more important implications than any other aspects in terms of immigrants setting. By running regression model with secondary data by Portes that tests a correlation between social capital and earning two different level school degrees by sex and a correlation between cultural capital and earning two different level school degrees by sex, respectively, and then combines them together, this study have tried to prove the prevalence of cultural capital effect over social capital effect on earning school degrees. However, test results show that, overall, social capital is more influential on high school completion and college completion than cultural capital, though relational cultural capital and ethnicity cultural capital still strongly associated with both high school completion and college completion only for boys.
