The purpose of this study was to determine what dental professionals and the lay population perceive to be the most esthetic position of the maxillary lateral incisor as related to the smile. Two photos of a female subject (smiling & teeth alone) were altered using computer-aided imaging to vary the position of the maxillary lateral incisors in 0.5mm increments (from edge-to-edge to 1.0mm relationship of the lateral and central incisal edges). Three panels rated the photos based on overall attractiveness using a 100mm visual analogue scale. All three panels rated the teeth on smiling less attractive than the teeth alone.
