This thesis works towards a formulation of a poetic of process in the work of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. In Dictee and her other works, poet and video artist Theresa Cha demonstrates a poetics of process and becoming. Through her use of fragmentation, displays of overwriting, and trans-media works, Theresa Cha demonstrates a poetics that emphasizes the potentiality and process of art in a state of becoming. The process used in Cha's work emphasizes the tensions between her identity markers, her understanding of historical records, and the divisions between individual and collective experiences. There is a displacement of identity, history, bodies, and the methods for forming these markers of individuals and collectives. The displacement is worked through in the in-between spaces, where things are not yet concrete and finalized. It is here that the process can be examined as a constitutive feature of Cha's poetic practice.
