The casting process is often neglected and viewed merely as a means to an end, with the product being considered more important. However, when the entire casting process is analyzed, sequenced and thoroughly understood, new outcomes and possibilities emerge. This research seeks to shift the emphasis from the final product to the making process and, in doing so, explore new design and construction parameters based on material properties and processes as opposed to standardized construction conventions. This will be achieved by synthesizing the process of forming the finished product with the physical work required to complete it, such that they become integral and evident parts of the final form. The use of fabric formwork and shaping while the concrete is still curing utilizes concrete's inherent weight and hydro pressure to generate seemingly soft and gentle forms. This research developed a system of casting in fabric formwork that challenged preconceived material notions of the casting process and concrete's capabilities.
