The importance of and relationship between research impact, visibility, and unique author identifiers will be discussed. Many societies, including ACS and RSC, now require ORCID author identifiers when submitting manuscripts. An ORCID ID is a unique number assigned to an individual researcher and used to easily and consistently connect each author with his or her publications and other research activities. Increasingly, research impact is being gauged by metrics, such as the number of citing papers. Hence, scholars must clearly establish which works are theirs and try to maximize the visibility of their scholarly publications.
