Interactive Erasures: An ergodic exploration of the spatial politics of knowledge

This investigation explores selected “eventualizations of power” defined by Michel Foucault as hermeneutical tensions between norms and subjects. The purpose of this document is to illustrate the set of rules that affect the emergence of content in an interactive media environment. “Interactive Erasures” utilizes a dynamic script for accessing the information that structures it as an interactive video installation. The principle of “ergodic literature”, fundaments its writing methodology, which refers to the particular effort that readers must put forth to make sense of the text and the project. “Interactive Erasures” is an interactive video installation that explores the illustration of the “Technologies of the Self” (Foucault 18), including the techniques of dominance developed by entities of political power. The installation uses examples of such narratives and turns them into video and sound essays. A computerized tracking system utilizes the position of participants to activate and produce random alterations to the video and soundtracks. The purpose of “Interactive Erasures” is to build a simulacrum –in terms of Jean Baudrillard- of multiple interpretations by staging the coalition of these technologies in an unpredictable manner, implying a constant variation of the contained narratives, depending on the interactivity of participants. The installation is designed to make fluctuations between technologies of the self and technologies of dominance in unpredictable ways, enabling a space of behavioral dynamics, denoting media as “an access to truth” (Merleau-Ponty XIII), instead of presuming media as “truth”. Appendices A, B, and C of this document include the full script of all chapters of the installation. Along with this written component, “Interactive Erasures” comprises the thesis project for the Master of Fine Arts of Sergio Andrés Nieto Uribe, at the Department of Media Study, University at Buffalo.
