Design, simulation and error analysis of an attenuation standard and attenuation measurement system

The purpose of the following work is the investigation into methods for determining attenuation of an unknown device with accuracy higher than that of standard industry measurement equipment. This effort will include the evaluation and all sources of related error and techniques for their reduction. The attenuation measurement system will incorporate a waveguide-below-cutoff piston attenuator as a reference standard against which the unknown attenuation will be measured; the standard attenuator will be implemented in a system level architecture that makes use of an IF substitution method which down converts the desired measurement band to a reference frequency that the standard attenuator operates at.
