Introduction to Theatre: A complete teaching guide
MetadataShow full item record
This project is setup to act as a “prompt book” or “bible” to outline everything needed to teach an undergraduate level Introduction to Theatre course at any two-year or four year collegiate institution. Introduction to Theatre is a course offered in most undergraduate theatre curricula that can also be used as a general elective course in the Arts for non-theatre majors. The course covers a broad spectrum of subject matter so in-depth discussion of individual topics is rarely feasible. To facilitate student success and maximize content exposure, the instructor must present information efficiently, while also ensuring that their students are retaining the information. This teaching manual for Introduction to Theatre includes an annotated course syllabus, daily class outlines, and three complete class outlines. The syllabus presented here is designed as if the course is being taught at the community college level, but it could be used at any undergraduate higher education institution. It includes all policies normally found in a syllabus. The daily class outlines have session-specific objectives, recommended resources for that day, and also ideas for further discussion or homework. The sample quiz questions in the complete class outline serve as illustrative examples of learning assessment. Finally, this teaching manual offers three complete class session outlines with presentation outlines and instructor notes. These are included to illustrate how each class could be formatted and taught. They represent different points in the progression of the curriculum. Introduction to Theatre is a survey course that covers a broad range of topics on theatre. This project delineates how this course would be taught and supplies all of the necessary information to successfully teach this course. My own teaching philosophy is intertwined throughout this project, but the structure is intentionally adaptable to fit individual purposes and preferences. Just as there are many ways to present William Shakespeare's Macbeth as a performance piece, there are also many ways to teach a course. This teaching manual dictates the foundational structure of an Introduction to Theatre course just as a script imparts the basis for a production of Macbeth. It is the job of the instructor to use this manual to create his/her interpretation of the course, shaping the performance to fit the needs of his/her audience.
