Caries is regarded as one of the primary diseases affecting the human teeth and is the cause of most dental restorations. The estimated cost of replacing failed restorations alone is well over a billion dollars annually in the US. Many advancements in the field of dental restorations and caries inhibition are being pursued in the laboratory and the clinic. Many of these aim to provide remineralizing agents and antibacterial agents that can improve integration of the tooth and restoration, and that can inhibit recurrent caries, respectively.
